My Friday started off racing to the airport, getting down the road and having to go home forgetting to transfer money for my trip.. Big mistake.. I got to the airport on time and met my best friend from Australia Jo. I haven't seen her for months so it was great to be able to catch up with her.
As soon as we got into Amsterdam we made it onto a train into the heart of the city. A short stroll across the bridge, a map in hand and suitcase in the other trying to find the hostel found us in the red light district. Well it was an interesting start to our holiday...
We finally got to St Christophers in, a lovely hostel in the heart of Amsterdam next to the red light district. We had a private room on the first floor (where wifi was at it's best!) The room was fine and there was a nice outdoor area as well as a bar! Woo!
I LOVE THIS PLACE!
I actually sat on their terrace and contemplated blowing out some or all of my America trip and setting up a coffee shop in Amsterdam by myself. (still might)
Our first night was crazy to say the least, certain substances, lovely people and a view to kill for sums it up quite well. Jo had bought us a 'romantic' canal cruise which was beautiful! We set off at about 8pm and went through the canals eating beautiful food and drinking wine. Content was an underestimate. We made it back to the hostel and to our surprise under the hostel had become a very very busy club... We met a load of interesting lovely people, one turned out to be a cosmopolitan centre fold boy! Thanks for the entertainment Ryan and Jono if you read this!
The next day was a bit painful with Jo jumping on me at 8am to get up and out to go visit Angelique Houtkamp to get tattooed at salon serpent. A slight hangover but nothing a dutch coffee couldn't help. We caught the tram South of the city, got lost a few times but somehow we made it! I then got to watch Jo struggle to move for the next 2 days.
That night was great, Jo passed out quite early after we somehow got carried away by a stag do (literally carried away) but I decided to party it out downstairs for the last night. Drinks were cheap and the music at the hostel was great. I ended up meeting my friend Preston I met in France a couple of weeks ago in Amsterdam for a drink (small world), we ended up adventuring around on canal boats, playing music on musical instruments and just having a laugh..
I made it back to the hostel eventually and then ended up finishing the night with Ryan who works at the hostel, it's funny how you can meet some people and just well click?
The great thing about travelling is that you cross paths with so many amazing people. You might never see them again or who knows you may bump into them years later and pick up from where you left off. It's those crazy nights that just happen that are the ones you remember when you travel.
Finishing note: Amsterdam is amazing, go trust me. Go to Vondelpark, people watch, go to museums, sit by the canal, hell get on the canal in a boat with a bottle of wine! Smoke a little ;) Meet people, fall in love with strangers, be spontaneous.. Just live..
